Selenium & Cobalt deficiency

Products containing selenium and cobalt are often recommended alongside a wormer to support lamb growth during this critical time.

Selenium deficiency

  • Can cause ‘white muscle disease’, sudden death and weak or stillborn lambs.
  • Affects growth, fertility and immune responses.
  • Is found on pastures with acidic soils, and high rainfall (above 450mm/year).
  • Typically affects lambs two-six weeks of age in the spring are particularly at risk.

Cobalt deficiency

  • Causes ill thrift in growing lambs and infertility of the adult ewe.
  • Is required for Vitamin B12 and is essential for maximum food utilisation.
  • Is caused by low soil cobalt concentrations.
  • Most commonly affects growing lambs.

Rycoben is effective against roundworms including Nematodirus battus tapeworms and lungworms.

The only white drench licensed as an aid in the prevention of cobalt and selenium deficiency.

Rycoben® SC Oral Suspension for sheep contains 2.5% (w/v) ricobendazole, 1.8% (w/v) hydrated cobalt sulphate and 0.097% w/v sodium selenate (anhydrous) as excipients. Chemical Group of Anthelmintic: 1 - BZ. POM-VPS in UK. Indications for use, specifying the target species: Broad spectrum worm and fluke drench; For the control of adult and larval stages of benzimidazole-sensitive gastrointestinal roundworms (Bunostomum, Chabertia, Cooperia, Haemonchus, Nematodirus, Oesophagostomum, Ostertagia, Strongyloides and Trichostrongylus), tapeworms (Moniezia) and lungworms (Dictyocaulus filaria), and for the control of adult liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) and the treatment of chronic, but not acute, fascioliasis in sheep. Ovicidal to round worm eggs. Also aids in the prevention of cobalt and selenium deficiency.Contra-indications and warnings: Sheep may be slaughtered for human consumption only after 3 days from the last treatment. Do not use in sheep producing milk for human consumption. Care should be taken not to exceed the recommended dose. Ewes should not be treated at the fluke and worm dose during tupping and until one month after the tups are removed. Ensure careful handling of the ewes if used during lambing time. Frequent use or misuse of anthelmintics may enhance the development of resistance. Only use this product in areas known to be deficient in cobalt and selenium. Do not administer other cobalt and selenium supplements concurrently unless advised by your vet. If in doubt consult a veterinary surgeon. Do not dilute. Wash hands after use. As with all animal health products direct contact should be kept to a minimum.
